MICHAEL KIPNESS (Founder of Wizard Stables)

Michael Kipness, also known as the Wizard, has been a professional handicapper and horse owner since the mid-eighties. The Wizard has owned several horses during this time, winning nearly 40 % of his races and hitting the board at a very strong 70 %. The reason for such success is the Wizard spots his horses in race where he feels they will be competitive. He’s a master at pointing for a race and getting the job done at huge prices. His biggest score was with Lydio in an Allowance race at Keeneland in 1999 paying $57.40. Other notable Wizard scores were with Street Trust on closing day at Saratoga in 2019 paying $15.60. At the Finish won 4 races in a row at Arlington Park off the claim for the Wizard. His most recent success was with the Wizard’s 2-year-old Walk with Me in her career debut November 9 at Aqueduct paying a whopping $18.

After being in the racing business for over 40 years, the Wizard has made many connections. The idea of raising money to form The Wizard’s racing syndicate came after many years of preparation. He strongly believes the success of such an endeavor lies in the team that you assemble. The Wizard has chosen the finest trainers, the perfect farm to raise the yearlings, and the bloodstock agent to help decide what horses to purchase at various auctions, at the right price. Transparency, patience and understanding the art of handicapping, all tie into the success of a the Wizard Stables racing syndicate.

DAVID DUGGAN (The Wizard’s New York trainer)

David Duggan, 55, born and raised in Tipperary, Ireland rode as a professional jockey in Ireland, Germany, Australia and India. He moved to California in 1993 to work for Neil Drysdale, spending eighteen months there, before moving to New York and working as an assistant to John Kimmel for five years. In 2000 David headed west again to Santa Anita, assisting Eoin Harty and Godolphin and spending several seasons at Santa Anita, Arlington Park and in Dubai. He helped train notable multiple graded stakes winners such as Street Cry, E Dubai, Tempera, Imperial Gesture and Zosima.

David started training on his own in New York in 2005, where he’s currently stabled at Belmont Park. He’s had success winning with stakes winners such as Porte Bonheur, Stud Muffin and the recently retired Drafted.

David is married to Lara, who is an experienced horsewoman herself. She can be seen every morning assisting in all barn duties, including exercising and working many of the horses in their stable.

KATIERICH FARMS-TRAINER DANNY LEITCH (Kentucky)

Located in Midway Kentucky, just 10 minutes from Keeneland Racetrack, KatieRich Farms is the home of many quality broodmares and weanlings and yearlings their mares produce. This is the farm that the Wizard has chosen to get his yearlings that he has purchased in auction sales to learn how to become racehorses. Once they become 2-year old’s on January 1st, they are sent to Keeneland to begin training for their debut.

KatieRich has employed full time horseman Daniel Letich to help break the baby’s and then train them at Keeneland in preparation for a career of racing or getting them ready to sell at prestigious auctions. Depending on the state where the horses were bred in, will determine where they begin their racing careers. Danny will be the Wizard’s trainer of record for claims made in Kentucky and who are Kentucky breds.

Currently, The Wizard has 3 yearlings in training at KatieRich named The Feisty One, Love is Real and Wiz the Bomb. His Walk with Me, a NY bred, who was bought for $100,000 as a yearling and sent to the farm to prepare for her 2-year-old debut by Danny Letich, broke her maiden first time out at Aqueduct on November 9, while given the final touches by trainer David Duggan.

RON SPATZ (The Wizard’s Florida trainer)

Ron Spatz has been a mainstay on the Florida circuit since taking out his trainer’s license in 1981. Stabled at Gulfstream Park, Ron has won nearly 800 races and over $16 million in earnings during his career highlighted by multiple graded stakes winner Carterista. His specialty is developing 2-year old’s, winning at 20 % first time out. His stable never exceeds 25 horses as he believes each one needs personal attention and that’s what he gives each and every horse.
